BasicX and Hacking Toys

Program Features:

This is the perfect program for kids who are looking to be able to create their own robot. We will start with an introduction to BasicX programming and quickly move into motor control. Within the first couple of days we will we be doing bench top activities on data collection, serial communication, output pin control, timing routines, and motor control using pulse width modulation. For the next couple of days we will taking apart old toy cars and gizmos and tying into thier drive mechanisms with our own electronic controls and sensors. The last day will be a series of events to compare our creations. An old RC car may be fast, but can it "turn on a dime?" How about and old toy tank? Do you think it would stand the best chance of pushing the other robots off a table? The competitions are as endless as the creations!

Activities:

Software OperationLearn the basics of a compiler and its operation.
Introduction to Electronics Breadboard electronic circuits and integrate with robotic controller.
DC Motor ControlUse PWM to control motion.
Complex MotionLearn all about subroutines.
Analog to DigitalLearn how to convert analog data to digital.
Obstacle AvoidanceUse real world data to make computer decisions.
Basic MechanicsLearn why certain mechanical designs are used.
Competitions to be decided. We will let the designs decide!
Daily DemonstrationsWalking, Talking, Emotional, robots

Requirements:

This class will require typing skills and basic computer understanding. We may at times need to use a soldering iron and other hand tools with the potential of causing some physical harm. Basic skills and responsibilies are a must. As a general rule, children should be 12 or older. Feel free to contact us to discuss your childs abilites.

Rates: Total $420

We will be charging the base rate of $300.00 a week for the basic class.
Since you get to keep your creation, we will need to have a material fee of $120 to cover the cost of a BX-24 microprocessor, BasicH motherboard, sharp IR range sensor, and misc fittings and connectors.
You will also need an old toy to hack. If you can't find one,we will have several old RC cars and toys to choose from at "garage sale" prices.
During the class, we will have copies of Chris Odom's book "BasicX and Robotics" for use. You may be interested in buying your own copy to keep for $44.95.
